Soft Rains and Tremulous White

The Poem

There Will Come Soft Rain Poem by Sara Teasdale
There will come soft rain and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white; Robins will wear their feathery fire, Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn Would scarcely know that we were gone.

About the Poem

Sara Teasdale’s 1920 lyric imagines a peaceful, post-human spring where nature carries on entirely indifferent to humanity’s destruction. The scene is lush and sensory: soft rain, the smell of damp earth, swallows circling with shimmering calls, frogs singing at night, and wild plum trees trembling white. Robins whistle their whims on fence-wire, wearing their feathery fire. Against this tranquil backdrop, Teasdale raises the stakes of war by suggesting that not one bird or tree will know or care when the conflict ends—or even if mankind perishes utterly. The mood is eerie rather than mournful, a quiet calm that underscores human insignificance. Spring herself, waking at dawn, would scarcely notice we were gone. The poem’s power lies in its stark contrast between natural beauty and human tragedy, offering a haunting meditation on how the world will simply continue without us.

About the Music

Oblivion Host by Elias Gray

Elias Gray’s Oblivion Host is a haunting piece of neoclassical darkwave that unfolds at a slow, deliberate tempo, evoking the grandeur of a desolate cathedral. The arrangement is sparse yet deeply resonant, built around a solitary cello that sings a melancholic melody over a deep, resonant bass drone. Distant, echoing piano notes drift through the mix like fading memories, while subtle atmospheric pads suggest vast, empty space. The mood is one of profound solitude and aching beauty, recalling the minimalist emotional weight of composers like Arvo Pärt or Max Richter. Gray crafts a soundscape that feels both intimate and immense, as if the listener is wandering through a frozen landscape where time stands still. The piece’s restrained dynamics and glacial pace invite introspection, making Oblivion Host a perfect soundtrack for moments of quiet reflection or cinematic sorrow.

About the Art

Tremulous White by Luna Vale

Luna Vale’s Tremulous White captures a luminous spring morning in the Impressionist tradition, using visible, textured oil paint strokes to convey movement and light. The composition centers on a cluster of wild plum trees in full, tremulous white bloom, which occupies the right two-thirds of the vertical frame and serves as the clear focal point. In the lower left third, a single robin with a flash of feathery fire red breast perches on a weathered fence wire, adding a vivid counterpoint to the muted pastel palette of soft whites, pinks, fresh spring greens, earthy browns, and hazy blue sky. Soft, diffused morning light filters through the blossoms, while the background dissolves into a blurred suggestion of fields and distant rain, evoking the atmospheric depth of Monet or Pissarro. The loose brushwork and delicate color harmony create a mood of serene fragility and fleeting beauty.
